Hello,

I'm hoping someone can satisfy my curiosity. There is part of a large root protruding from the ground in my front garden, and there was this sprig growing out of it. There are just small boxwoods and hydrangeas in the garden now, but before the house was built, there were large trees in the area. Anyone have an idea what it is?

Thanks very much.

Yes looks like a locust. They can spread underground and come up as suckers, something like blackberries but farther away, so there is possibly another locust tree growing within 100 feet. If so there will be other suckers spread out somewhere.

Thanks very much for the reply. Yes--there is a Black Locust in the yard not far away. Sorry for my ignorance--I didn't realize that root could have been from it. Mystery solved.
