Do some sod rolls contain some kind of fabric layer?

The previous owner of my house had laid down sod rolls that then ended up dying. We've been trying to repopulate the grass from seed to save money, but noticed there was a kinda mat everywhere ... kinda like coconut coir mats, beige fibres roughly weaved together. I wonder if we need to remove all the remnants of the old sod rolls before we can successfully repopulate our lawn.

I bought some St Aug sod once and they used plastic mesh. It helps keep things from tearing apart when you cut the sod or toss it about. That plastic has been working out of the soil for decades, the pieces seem smaller when we find them now.
