This might not seem odd to those of you used to warmer climates but it's pretty much a first for me and I've been gardening since I was 7

Potatoes are not at all frost hardy, so it just shows what a warm winter we're having, it's currently 14C

I know, in the Netherlands is the same. I'm having a bad feeling about this... I know they say that the earth is supposed to cook itself in its own greenhouse gases in 1 billion years, but I do have the feeling we humans are making that time frame shorter and shorter. By the way, I was reading this in a science book last night D: I pray to God this is not it.

Still time for it to get colder, lets enjoy it while its here :)

It's true we're putting more CO2 into the air, but I wouldn't worry too much about it, we're at the lowest atmospheric CO2 levels since it was locked up in the coal in the carboniferous period.

400 parts per million at the moment.

It was something like 2,500 ppm in the Jurassic, yes the ice caps melted and sea level was slightly higher, but life was prolific and we didn't have a runaway greenhouse effect :cautious:

The whole global warming story is to keep folks minds off the alternative - the actual fact that we're still in an ice age.

During the present ice age there have been 4 interglacial periods when the ice retreated to where it is now, some of them were longer and warmer than this present one which has only been 10,000 years, a very short time geologically speaking.

Most of the glaciers that governments previously said were retreating are advancing :cautious:

When the ice last covered northern Europe there were probably a million or so humans world wide, so easy enough for them to move south.

So where do the 100's of millions of us go if the ice spreads again? Syria? Egypt? Mexico?

Zigs, do you think you'll be able to harvest the potatoes before frost gets them........if it does?

I don't mind you getting on your soapbox, it's interesting to hear/read what you say. Thank you. :)

Should get some small new potatoes :) Got a cloche to lob over them if it does turn cold :) Won't be able to protect them from a 2 mile thick moving glacier though :D

When I was learning Geology, no one really knew what caused ice ages. There were some unlikely theories about new mountain ranges changing weather patterns :cautious:

Now the penny has dropped that it's more than likely down to solar output, if the sun goes into a hibernation period it won't make a blind bit of difference how much CO2 there is in the air, we just get cold.

Have a look at this, then tell me if i'm wrong and we're not being lied to...

Note that previous interglacials were warmer than today, overall the planet is cooling not warming

Just how warm its been here is illustrated by my most recent utility bill. Normal for winter is between $180 and $220 (last year this time it was $196.)

Current bill for late November and December? $71.00. o_O

Which mind you I appreciate. But its just wrong. My rhododendron bush is valiantly putting out flower buds; typically it flowers in May.

Lucky you still have potatoes growing :)

I have a friend who lives in Bristol, England, she took a photo of her Christmas tree and of her blooming daffodils! It is strange to see daffodils blooming at this time, anywhere for sure!
