Damaged Spruce Shrubs

I have two tall spruce shrubs ( 5ft) that I have for many years

I just noticed that back of both of them has some damage

They both have giant holes in the back . It is like scooped some ice cream out out cartoon

Look like it been cut out

Any idea what caused this ?
