We moved into our property in July and in the fall we pruned the crêpe myrtle shrubs… The plant is coming up from the ground now, but I didn’t know whether I should cut back the sticks or leave them.

Welcome @Swasson48 Your location is where I was born and raised.

Crepe myrtle is notorious for coming back from severe pruning. I cut one down once and it kept sending up shoots for years after.

So, it is up to your preference as what you prefer...a single shoot plant or a bushy plant or multiple plants. Regardless, you can expect it to send more shoots up that you will need to deal with. It's just the nature of the species.

I would like to keep this a small shrub because it’s pretty close to the house foundation. And they are planted all around the house. Along with knockout roses. I’m not really sure how to prune any of them so guess I’m learning.

The Crepe Myrtle isn't likely to cause any foundation problems..."Crape Myrtle roots are non-invasive and don’t pose a damage risk to your home, foundation, or sewer lines. Their roots are fibrous and shallow, and they tend to spread wider rather than deeper."

Pruning them encourages blooming as well as managing shape. You don't need to worry about killing them...just prune to your own preference as to shape.
