i am trying to identify this tree so that i can begin finding advice as to why is is not performing as well as it was in the garden centre when we bought it. it looks permanently dehydrated , it hardly flowers anymore and it has green dust on its stems

It does look like a Ceanothus flower, and the leaf certainly looks right for Ceanothus as well. The trouble is, it`s a rather big tree for such a small pot, and it needs to be in the ground really. This plant is happy to be in a sheltered spot out of the wind, and likes to have well drained soil. Your tree could do with planting out, a jolly good soak and a feed. Ceanothus are not happy to be cut back though.

new home . it can breathe out again now. poor thing was tight in there. all the roots had nowhere to go- they had started growing upwards. thank you. any advice on pruning? i have never pruned anything. ever.

This one will not like pruning - you might kill it !! Make sure it has enough water to get it established, and maybe a feed. Some well rotted horse muck would be lovely. I`m well impressed with your efforts. (y)
