Bromeliaceae or aechmea family. You water the plant via where the flower stem area called the urn. The Philippines is perhaps a good place for it.

Oh! I didn't know that, I was actually avoiding putting water there because I thought it might cause rotting or something. Thanks for that info!

You can have a look here. They are pretty indestructible and you can see new shoots from the side. You could put it in the bathroom where the daily dose of moisture might benefit it. Have a look here please!
