This mushroom type fungus has been growing on my tree in my garden. I cut off the branch that was largely affected. Will this be enough to stop the spread?

That is just a common fungus and it is totally harmless to your tree. All it is doing is eating the dead portions of the plant. There are many different types of this fungus. Some folks call it Tooth Fungus, some Milk Fungus but the scientific name for it is Irpex Lacteus. Anyway it is harmless as a toad stool in your lawn.
