Calendula officinalis was the original Marigold of Europe and the Mediterranean, long before the other Marigolds (Tagetes spp.) were brought back from the New World by early Spanish explorers.
Calendula officinalis is also known as 'Pot-marigold' because the flowers are edible and thus suited for the cooking pot.
Calendula is the type genus of a small, but distinctive Tribe (Calenduleae) in the Daisy Family (Asteraceae). The entire Tribe is native to the Old World, being especially diverse in southern Africa.
