While you're going to make a garden, you must build up the soil at first. A deep and organically rich soil will encourage the growth of extensive and healthy roots those are able to more water plus nutrients. This step will help you get a great garden. In which way did you build up that soil of your garden? There may be some good ways.

Actively-aerated compost tea helped greatly in the organic enrichment of my soil. The greatest weapon in my armoury.
I then gathered every leaf I could and dug it in, (still do every autumn, encouraging the enlargement of the population of worms in my soil for further enrichment.
