Hi, hoping someone will be able to help me. I would like to plant a box hedge as a border on our drive. The trouble I have is this is made up ground. I plan to dig a trench and fill with screened soil and organic matter. I'm wondering how deep I need to go. Thanks for reading

9", or 12" if that is the size of the rootball. Sideways is more important than deep. Most plants have roots that parallel the surface ~about the diameter of the drip-line.

Thanks for replying. I have taken delivery of potted plants that are around 20cm in height. I guess the pots are only around 4 or 5 inches. As I say the ground was made up with subbase and rolled to within an inch of its life so is hard but if I dig a good 12 inch trough and back fill with screened soil this will be sufficient for the development of the hedge?

They are slow growing. They will grow normally until they reach the hard packed soil after which they grow even slower.
