Our natural soil pH is 5.0-5.5 and we still use acid loving fertilizer on ours. I have measured pH in the 4.0 range. There is a phosphorous availability down in those ranges that in part explains why ours do so well. They do not grow that fast, so what you do this year wont really show up until next year.

Acid, acid, and more acid. New bushes need a lot of water that first summer. If they dry out, its likely curtains for them.

The rewards are great, but that first year they require a lot of attention.

You would be better off planting them in large pots and put the pots in the ground. It will be much easier to keep the soil in the pots adjusted to where it needs to be. If not chances are that they will never look like they do when you buy them.

Size of area is important. I suggest a minimum of 12 plants. They take some maintenance. Acid soil. Bird protection is paramount. I don't grow them anymore. Several local farms pick your own are available. I can around 70 liters for juice yearly. They make excellent juice with little effort.

Five pounds of blueberries were harvested from my six plants today. There were two pounds harvested two day ago.

I have to grow mine in large pots, our soil isn't any good for them. I use a ereacacous compost and rain water. In the summer i use a soluble fertiliser for blueberries when they need to be watered. Have to stop the black birds from eating the fruit.
I only prune out the dead stems.
