Where I live I don't have them but my gardening friends in Houston have tons of them. They tell me that beneficial nematodes are the way to go but I don't know if they are available in the UK

I've done a quick google on beneficial nematodes and they look like a great method. I hadn't heard of them until now!

We will use beer traps to get rid of slugs. Fill a plastic cup halfway with beer and bury it in the garden up to the rim. Leave about a half inch above ground. The slugs are attracted to the smell of the beer and tumble in. I heard you could use milk if you don't have beer. I can remember sprinkling salt on slugs when I was a kid, that always worked to kill them too.

Beer seems to be pretty popular! I'll definitely give it a try when I'm planting lettuce.

The slug is the mortal enemy of my husband. Just last month, our garden was attacked by about 20 slugs - those big Japanese snails that can finish a small bush in one sitting. Our lemon plant that was a foot high was left with no leaves. What we do with the slugs is to gather them in a metal pail and then we ground them to serve as fertilizer. At least they have a purpose in life.

Put down a small saucer with some beer in it. Another method is crushed up egg shells spread around the plants

You can also use stale beer in case you don't feel like wasting some good beer. That if you can find any stale beer ;) Hehehe! That's never the case at home (my fiance drinks 'em all).

The best way that I have rid of slugs is through slug pellets. I do not do this anymore because it makes me feel bad. One thing that I've seen my fiance's grandmother do is remove the slugs from the area and then make a ring of borax around the plant. You just need to be careful when watering it. I apologize if I got this wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's borax she uses.

I never knew about the beer but I'm sure going to try that. Hmmm...Beer attracts slugs? I know salt works. It makes them lose water content and dry out. Some salt sprinkled around the area will works wonders. You can also put the salt directly on them and they will just curl up right in front of your eyes.
