Depending on where that you live it would be now, the plants should have been in the ground awhile ago. Until you let us know where you live it is difficult to give you and information on what to do and how to do it.
Well you want to plant them just before it becomes super hot. I usually plant them in April, that way it gives them time to grow and by the time July comes around they are all ready to produce and the sun is one of the basic factors in turning them red.
