Hi, guys please help me. It was my dream to have a home with a big garden full of flowers, vegetables and fruits. But unfortunately, we are currently living in a 2 bedroom apartment in Ontario. However, we have a beautiful balcony near the master bedroom and I badly want to have a cute garden in the available space. Heard that raised garden bed plan requires only a small space and a few materials.I have already contacted “In the backyard’, raised garden bed experts. My question is what is the recommended height and width for a raised bed? I am interested in planting vegetables like potatoes, carrot, tomatoes etc in it.

Thanks in advance.

The height depends on what you want to plant. If you want to plant tomatoes then the hight should be about 1 ft tall.
And for underground veggies I would do 2 ft.
For the tomatoes, however, I would suggest you plant them in plastic gardening pots:)

Good luck (y)

Armida, are you on the ground floor? By saying "balcony" I think you may be on at least the second story of the building. Please check with the superintendent to see how much weight you can put on that balcony. Pots filled with dirt and watered are quite heavy and could pull the balcony away from the building, or cause it to collapse.

I would list the variety of veggies that you would like to "try" to grow. And get your planting box to match the deepest need of what is on your list. Remember, next year you may want to try another something. If the weight business might be an issue, then do half of it on each side of the space. Remember your going to have to have a draining area under the box onto the balcony.

A container garden would be best. The direction your balcony is facing, that would be an important factor, and something you should take in to consideration in terms of what you will be planting.
