It looks like teasel weed. The cone shape will be a purple flower. If it goes to seed, the birds like to eat the seeds. People use them in dried flower arrangements. But it's pretty much a weed.
To me, it's a plant. I love to see goldfinches pecking away at something natural. I have seeds and dropped a few onto the hot and wet ground yesterday. I keep my fingers crossed to see them coming up. A most handsome plant! Lovely and architectural teasel!
Ya know.. I was pulling "weeds" at bass pro, and I pulled some wild flower that turns out, wasn't a "weed" I don't think there's technically such a thing as a weed... A weed is something you don't want growing were it's at
