Garlic in my Zone 5 is planted about 15 of October. I am peparing the bed about 8 by 12 ft. The bed was rototilld, a layer of compost added, and a sprinle of NPK fertilizer was added and rotilled in. Tomorow the bed will be covered with wood chips about three inches. In October marked rows will be scraped and the garlic will be planted about 100 plants. The garlic plants push though th mulch with no difficulty.

9 September 2021 Mulching Garlic
Mulching garlic bed for planting about the middle of October. The boards keep mulch off the garlic row until planted when they will be removed. The cloves, bulbils and rounds will cling to the soil when planted. The mulch is mostly for moisture retention and a bit o Winter protection. The plants come up through the mulch with no diiculty in the Spring.

Three rows for use 32 plants in a 16 foot row, 6 inch spacing, Row spacing about 10 inches. Just under a 100 plants.
A row of rounds, and a row of rounds produced bulbs for seed, and a row of bulbils. My garlic is lways top quality. I could reduce the space but space is not at a premium. Bulbils sometimes don't germinate a 100 percent. My garlic is always quality. I could reduce the space but it is not necessary. With the mulch I do not have to give any care except a bit of weeding. Moisture is usually suficient.

First batch of garlic is dried and trimmed for storage. Average size of bulbs is 120 grams. Largest bulb is 143 grams. Some bulbils are also drying for planting in October. It has been dry so leaving a row in the ground they didn’t grow any bigger and only three split. This is hardneck garlic.

Lot of green, maybe harvest too soon. I now leave until the bulb burst the skin. Harvest in late August if not too wet. I found the cloves get larger and the garlic keeps as well in my little cold room. I have looked at some garlic festivals and mine is uually better than most in size.

In a bed that size you should be able to plant close to 300 garlic. I get 98 in my 4x8 beds

Lets see pictures. I grow as large as the plant allows. Usully larger than is seen at garlic festivals. I grow what is considered perfect garlic. IMO
