I saw some heavy duty cardboard tube from the middle of a roll of carpet and went "I'll have that!". It comes in sections about 3' and I can cut it easily to make it 9" or 4 -1/2 deep containers which are 4" across inside, no bottom of course, I'd probably stand them on a plank. My question is what do you think I could grow in them? I'm thinking lettuce might work, one to a pot, carrots?

That sounds like a good idea Oliver. I like the sound of lettuce and I would love to see a few carrots growing in one. After you get set up post a photo so I can see what you are talking about for sure.

Sounds like an improved cutworm collar from using a toilet paper roll.

I think a leaf lettuce may work but will likely be rootbound later in life. Onions, radish, beet maybe. Sounds like a lot of trouble though.

I was looking the other day for something to bind up my celery stalks into growing bundles. That tube might work for that application if you started out with it before the stalks got too large. At this point, it wouldn't have enough diameter. I ended up using plastic straps.

My experience of growing carrots in containers is not huge, but at 4" I would expect to grow one in each. My best result with a 14 inch bucket so far is with five, a square with one in the middle. I find if they don't have room they simply don't grow to any size. The same might be true of a lettuce, one per tube, but one lettuce is not like one carrot
My interest in carrots in containers is because I find they are free from pests, growing out in the garden they tend to attract slugs, and it means you can do routines like weeding and then lift them up and not worry about carrot fly.
