The first potato of the season, Yukon Gold. The weight from one plant was 1902 grams long before maturity. The plants are not hilled simply covered with soil and mulch. New tubers form just above the seed potato in about a one foot diameter, never along the stalk. The weight is excellent. I determine weight by what an individual plant produces. This plant would have probably another one to two months to grow. I have been suspicious of hilling and have found just keeping the new tubers covered is sufficient and maximum green growth is exposed to sunlight. It never made sense to me to cover the top of the plant with soil by excessive hilling. This row was planted 3 May 2018
