The first watermelon of the 2018 season. Put outdoors on 5 June 2018 from seedlings. The round ones are Sugar Baby. The one striped one over wintered and came up from seed. I counted 15 in the garden. The one picked weighed 5 kilo. It was excellent. Having grown them off and on over the years, I am still a novice in establishing ripeness.

As far as I know, it's when they twist off the vine easily, which kind of makes sense.

Not bad for a novice. Not bad at all.

I took three off this morning, using the color of yellow where the fruit sat on the ground as an indicator of ripeness.. Two were OK. One was pure white inside. It was discarded. They were 4 4 and 5 kg. I am in the process or juicing the two that were OK.
